Homemade Hot Chocolate

Chocolate is good for you! Aside from actually having some pretty real health benefits (especially when talking dark chocolate)... it is important to remember that our mental health is just as important as our physical, and if a sugary treat now and then makes us smile and feel good inside... then we think it must be good for you - Its all about balance! Nothing quite beats a good old hot chocolate, and the homemade kind are definitely something quite special. Below we share a simple but decadent Hot Chocolate Recipe that anyone can make and enjoy at home.

A Homemade Hot Chocolate

Ingredients:
  • 2 cups Mylk of choice. If you are wanting something a little different Coconut Milk makes this hot chocolate taste more like a bounty bar!
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • 128g / 1 cup Dark Chocolate (50%) Chopped
  • Put 1 piece of Chocolate aside for grating over the top at the end.
  • Whipped cream and marshmallows for topping (optional)

Method:

  1. Combine the mylk and sugar in a small pot and place on the stovetop over a low to medium heat.
  2. While the mylk is heating, melt the chocolate in either the microwave or over a double boiler.

Microwave: Place the chopped chocolate in the microwave and heat for 30 seconds. Take out and stir it. Continue to heat and stir the chocolate in 30 second intervals until just melted. Keeping a close eye on it so it doesn't over cook.

Double Boiler: If you are using this method, it is best to bring your water to the boil before starting to heat your mylk (step 1). Bring a small pot of water to the boil, place a heat proof bowl over the pot of boiling water (this bowl must be big enough to sit on top of the pot and not fall in at all). Put chopped chocolate into the bowl and stir consistently until melted.

  3. When the mylk starts to form bubbles on the side you know it is ready, turn off the heat and add the melted chocolate, whisking to combine.
  4. Pour into your favourite Husk and Honey Mug, top with whipped cream, grated chocolate and marshmallows if using. Enjoy with a good book or movie!
